Are we having a record Cobia season? Fished the Turtle today with my son and my high school football coach. Best day of the year, hooked 6 landing 4. Lost two small ones holding them in the water to try to attract more to the boat. All the fish were about the same size with the biggest one in the picture below. We tagged 3, kept one, cleaned it and dropped the carcass off at he Waddell center for their research. I don't think it can be better than catching fish, talking football and remembering old times with your coach.

Cobia Time

Early signs point to a great Cobia season this year. Made 3 trips this week hooking at least one Cobia each trip. 1st trip we went on a fly fishing sight casting adventure. We did not sight many fish but did manage to put the hook in a nice 40 pound er. The fish followed the fly all the way to the boat and ate the fly right under our feet. Bad part was with all the fly line stacked up on the front of the boat the line got tangled in the trolling motor and when the fish took off the leader popped. Wednesday the first ten minutes we anchored up on the Turtle what I thought was a shark bite turned out to to be a nice 30 pound Cobia. Robert Ellison skillfully landed the nice male fish working the line around the motor and several head shaking jumps. Another fish was following the Cobia but we could not get that one to eat. Thursday fishing the Brays Island annual catch and release Cobia Tournament we boated a nice 47" Cobia to win the big fish trophy for the day.
Quite a few fish were taken last week with very few fishermen reporting catching the undersized fish like were caught last year. The big females should come in the river soon.
